2.2 The foreign element
The foreign element is the event, person, idea, or program that helps identify the limits of the status quo. In the context of the sedentary problem, the foreign element is the idea that sitting is the root of many health issues and movement throughout the day can transform your health positively. Hopefully, the information in this book has helped transform some of your assumptions about health and fitness. For example, sitting has negative effects on your health whether you exercise or not.
This new awareness is a foreign element. It is foreign because it comes from outside of your world of sitting. It challenges your assumptions and offers new hope and possibilities. The ThinkMOVE program aims to be challenging and yet realistic by beginning with moderate changes. The program introduced in later chapters introduces only a few simple MOVE breaks lasting a minute each. It builds up from there until the MOVE habit becomes integrated seamlessly.
Through the process of change, it is beneficial to practice appreciating yourself for your willingness to improve your health and embrace change. Notice the early changes you make and celebrate them. These little changes form the foundation for larger, lasting changes.
People at this stage are contemplative; they are still on the fence. They are open to ideas about changing their behavior, but have not made a decision or a commitment to change. They are considering the pros and cons of changing and exploring their choices.
The resistances that people are likely grappling with at this stage include low motivation, self-conscious thoughts, and low confidence from past failures. These resistances make it difficult to imagine success. Having a clear and compelling goal for your health will help you build motivation.
As for self-conscious thoughts, having a compelling reason is a powerful way to overcome negative judgments; your own or others’. For you, it might be wanting to be there for your loved ones, or reaching your retirement with a healthy body so you can enjoy life. Finally, connecting with colleagues who will support and move with you is another way to overcome self-conscious thoughts.
